Learn the craft behind the curtain
Now entering its third year, afO’s apprenticeship is designed to guide an already-theatre-savvy individual through some of the rudiments of directing a stage play, including:
–selecting the play;
–surveying approaches to production design;
–crafting a rehearsal schedule;
–holding auditions;
–blocking the play;
–giving clear direction to actors;
–polishing each scene;
–working with the production team to mount the finished product.
Over the course of about a year, apprentices will meet four to six times with the Artistic Director, for discussion of assigned readings from several excellent texts on directing. All will have opportunities to sit in on auditions and rehearsals, and eventually will be invited to stage manage or serve as a director’s assistant for one show of our season. Second year students will deepen their understanding and expand their reading. The apprenticeship culminates with a chance to co-direct a Main Stage production and/or direct a shorter work for our Out of the Box experimental theater project in the spring, at the Artistic Director’s discretion.
